money@saltbox.org.uk

https://saltbox.org.uk/money-matters/

About the service

Money Matters exists to support Stoke-on-Trent’s most disadvantaged people to manage their money and debt issues, and support them in accessing benefits or other means of support.

We work in partnership with the Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank, which is a Trussell Trust Foodbank, to provide support to their guests.  We recognise that our clients need additional support at a time of crisis. We hold drop-in sessions at the Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank distribution centres, in order to make us easily accessible to foodbank guests. This means they don’t need to make yet another appointment and go to yet another place when they are going through a crisis.

Our approach, therefore, is to both address immediate need (e.g. dealing with a debt issue) but also to up-skill service users in order that they can be more confident in managing their money and successfully navigate the benefits system.

We:

  • gather information about income, outgoings, debts, assets
  • draw up a sustainable budget
  • tailor information and advice on the best debt solutions available to you
  • carry out benefit checks and give advice
  • help with filing in benefit applications and form filling
  • signpost to other complementary services

Who we work with

The Money Matters service is open to guests who are current users of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-Staffs Foodbanks.

About the service

Restart provides shared supported accommodation for the homeless or those at risk of homelessness, helping individuals to successfully re-settle and integrate back into community life, whilst providing a safe place for those who want to deal with life’s challenges.

Clients receive an individually tailored support package. We help them to develop confidence and, as a result, individuals develop positive relationships, promoting social inclusion and independence which, in turn, helps to build a capacity for independent living.

All clients undertake an induction to the service, setting out clear boundaries and expectations. Each client is assigned a key support worker who provides an initial period of intense support whilst they settle into the accommodation and the service. Support workers help to build trust and confidence during a time of great need in our clients.

About the service

Although dyspraxia may be diagnosed at any stage of life, increasing numbers of children are identified as having the condition.

Early recognition of dyspraxia will enable early intervention and practical steps to help your child to achieve their potential. Children whose dyspraxia is identified at an early stage are less likely to have problems with acceptance by their peers and with lowered self-esteem.

When children become teenagers their problems may change as social and organisational difficulties become more pressing.

The Dyspraxia Foundation can help and support you and your child through its services and publications.

We also offer a dedicated Adult Facebook Group for those with the condition.

How you can contact us:

Our helpline is here to help you!

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to offer telephone support. Support is still available via e-mail, and you can contact us securely and in confidence via our helpline form which you can find here: https://dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk/helpline/ We are committed to reinstating the telephone helpline as soon as it is safe enough for our staff and volunteers to return to the head office.

Social Activity clubs – We have three clubs running for our younger members.   One club is for children under 16 years of age, a club for ages 13 to 17 and a club for members 16 to 25 years.  These clubs provide a safe friendly environment where young people can be themselves and make friends, or just enjoy their own space. We have many, gaming consoles including the X-Box, Play Station and the Wii, and there are arts and crafts materials available.

A carer/ parent is required to stay during the sessions (for under 18 years of age) but parents can relax in the other room and have a cuppa and a chat. We are a very supportive group and you would be made very welcome.

Craft Club – Takes place at the King Street Studio on the 1st Wednesday of every month 6.30-8.00pm. It is suitable for all ages and siblings.

Adult Social Club 18+ – Sessions are held monthly either virtually by zoom or at King Street Studio, King Street, Newcastle.  Other social activities are also planned on a regular basis for example meals out, bowling and many more. The aim of the club is to promote confidence and independence.

Some organisations represented include Aiming High; a local Solicitor, a representative from the Family Fund and Parent Participation and Involvement. Sometimes the group runs as a parent/ carer self-support group, where people have the chance to talk and discuss issues that they feel are pertinent to their lives. staffordshirecares@staffordshire.gov.uk

About the service

Staffordshire County Council are a registered provider of support services to adults with a learning disability and their carers.

Residential services

At Staffordshire County Council, we know how important a home is.

Greenfield House is a residential home for 10 adults with a learning disability located in the picturesque market town of Leek, commonly known as queen of the Moorlands.

Respite services

We appreciate the incredible dedication of carers and acknowledge the challenges and responsibilities that may come with supporting someone with a learning disability or autism. We understand the importance of carers having a chance to recharge their batteries, to allow them to carry on in their caring role. We also understand the benefit for the individual of having a break away from the home for a few days, as they can be supported to establish new friendships, join in both internal and external activities, and just have some fun when staying for respite.

Douglas Road offers a 13-bed service for the purpose of planned short breaks for a range of people from the age of 16 upward with a presenting need of learning disability and other associated needs.

Day opportunities

We understand how important it is for people to participate in meaningful activities which they enjoy. Getting the support I need (stoke.gov.uk)

About the service

Stoke-on-Trent Adult Social Care views all of our residents as unique individuals who have strengths, assets, gifts and talents. As a result, we have developed a Community Led Support approach to support people to live more independent and fulfilled lives within their local communities.

We will:

  • Have conversations and develop relationships with residents to better understand what you can do, rather than what you can’t do.
  • Develop help in the community by working together with groups and organisations, supporting them to support you.
  • Develop and embrace new ways of working by allowing and supporting our workforce to be creative in providing support.

You can access the Community Directory on the website at any time it aims to help you to identify the support you may need and link you into possible resources in your local area.

If you feel that you may require some equipment within your home you can access an online support tool which will, based upon your answers recommend possible equipment options and where these can be purchased.

web.stokeontrent@actionforchildren.org.uk

About the service

We provide a wide variety of activities for Children and young people with disabilities or additional needs up to their 20th birthday who aren’t able to go to other community activities in their community without some support.

Our aim is to enable you to have a break and your children to have a fun activity and we offer a broad programme you can choose from. Which is very varied and provides for children and young people with many different needs.

We aim to help children live their life, their way. For disabled children, that means doing whatever it takes to make life better – from celebrating the small steps to making a long-term plan for adulthood. We provide short breaks for children and their carers – a chance for everyone to take time out and enjoy new experiences. Through our national campaigning and advocacy work, we listen to what children want, act on their behalf and make their voice louder.

What we do

Short Breaks are activities for children and young people, usually away from home, that enables them to have fun with their mates and practise new skills, while at the same time giving a breather for the family.

For the child a short break means :

  • Catching up with mates
  • Share fun times and make friends
  • Practising new skills
  • Enjoy the experience and try new things
  • Take part in activities which help their development
  • Something to rely on
  • Feel safe and know what to expect from their short break

Typical activities in the Stoke-on-Trent area include:

  • trampolining
  • fishing
  • sailing
  • sports
  • multi-sensory play
  • family activities and many more

For the family a short break means :

  • Mum and dad can catch up
  • A breather for the family
  • Know that their brother or sister is enjoying their short break
  • Be able to have time with their parents that is not taken up with caring responsibilities
  • Be able to do their homework or just have some time for themselves
  • Be able to join their brother or sister for some short break activities from time to time
  • Something they can reply on
  • Have clear information and know what services are available to them
  • Have a range of services from which they are able to make choices
  • Have trust in the short break provider, and to know that the carers are trained, understand their child’s needs and provide safe short breaks
  • Access support from other parents and staff – both practical and emotional – and to experience reduced levels of stress due to caring.
