Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) can make life good when life is hard.
PBS can help:
- When things go wrong
- We cannot get something we need
- Life is not good
- It is difficult to cope
- We do not feel ok
- Other people do not want us to do something

What is this?
Challenging behaviour can make life harder for a person to have a good life
Some people may:
- Shout and swear
- Spit or hit
- Hurt themselves or hurt other people
- Break things
- Frighten other people
- Run away, withdraw or isolate themselves
- Make other people worried about some of the things they do
- Do dangerous things or things that aren’t socially acceptable
- Some people may say no or refuse to do things that they need to do

When these things happen, they can stop someone from getting what they need or doing things that they want to do!
Behaviours that challenge always happen for a reason:
- We may be poorly or in pain
- We might not know how to tell someone
- We might feel frightened
- People may not know how to talk to us
- People may not know what we want or like
- We may be trying to ask for your help
- We might not understand what someone is saying
- We may be bored or tired
- Sometimes we may want to be left alone
- We can’t always find things to keep busy
- People may not know enough about us
- People may not know the things that upset us
- The things that make us angry
- People might upset us
- There may be too much happening around us
- It might be noisy, smelly, loud, too light or dark
- To environment might not be right
- We might feel lonely
We may need support from others when these things happen.

PBS finds out what is wrong and how this can be put right
You will not be punished or told off for behaviour. You are trying to communicate what is wrong. You may need to learn new ways of doing this. PBS helps make things better. It looks at how we can change things around you so behaviour doesn’t happen.
Assessing – It is important to:
- Find out what you need by talking to you
- Ask friends and family for information
- Explore new skills to teach you
- Look at medication, sensory needs, health needs
- Look at friendships and activities
Behaviour Support Plan – This will include:
- Helpful information about you
- Plans to learn new things to help
- Ideas around how others can help you best
Reviewing – Everyone working together:
- Everyone will do PBS together
- Your plan will be reviewed often
- You will be involved in your own plan
PBS will help you to have a better life
The people who support you, like your family and staff, will have a better life too
A good PBS plan means everyone knows:
- What makes you happy
- The things you want to do
- What you need
- The ways to get you what you need
- New things to learn
- What upsets you
- Things that make you feel better
- How to keep everyone safe
Everybody works together to understand why the behaviour that challenges happens
Sometimes things can still go wrong
- The plan says what happens to you when you start feeling upset or unhappy
- The plan tells staff what to do to help you feel calm again
- The plan tells staff how to help you feel better afterwards
Everybody works together to support you to have a good life and important things
